Learn Plant, Weed, and Insect Identification Skills

Learn to identify a sampling of the Bay Area local plants, weeds and bugs, and find out which are good/bad bugs, how some bugs are beneficial to your garden and which are culprits and how they interact, whether a weed is good, bad, noxious and/or invasive, and learn to identify plants by genus/species using a dichotomous key.

Presenter Master Gardener Terry Messinger: Terry’s primary project/interest is training newly certified Master Gardeners on the use of the San Mateo/San Francisco Master Gardener (MG) helpline to solve incoming queries about the home garden. In addition, she staffs the info booths at the SF Flower & Garden Show and County Fair, has been a docent for plant ID at garden tours and the San Mateo Arboretum tour, and co-teaches a winter rose pruning clinic in Burlingame.

Presenter Master Gardener Alan Ernat: Alan has a degree from UCSC in Biogeography which has given him in-depth knowledge of the earth’s history and possibilities for the future environment. He is actively involved with the Master Gardener program, and works as a private garden consultant.

Our workshops have become very popular. To ensure a more pleasant experience for everyone please read the following:

  • On-time start:

Please plan on arriving a least 10 minutes early. We will hold your place until starting time. If you have not arrived by the published start time for the clinic we will begin seating our waiting list. We are sorry we cannot hold a spot for late-comers.

  • If you can’t make it:

Please do let us know by calling Sales at 650-364-1730 or email [email protected]

  • Extra folks:

Please make sure everyone in your party registers. Many of our clinics fill up fast and we often have a waiting list, so please understand if we canÕt add a spouse or friend at the last minute.

  • Children:

The content of our classes is for adults. Due to attention span, we discourage children from attending our classes, unless the class is specifically for children. If your child is a serious garden enthusiast and would enjoy sitting through a 1 1/2-2 hour lecture, please let us know when you register and we will gladly consider them for the class.
